An Appeal from Tanya Pinto, Founder of Baal Dan Charities
This emergency fund feeding/support for children who are suffering from acute malnutrition for a period of 8 weeks to save their lives. Please donate now!
Our Impact To Date: Baal Dan Has Provided $105,000 towards relief since December 2022. Withyour help we can do more!
ASDEPO is an organization with more than 300 staff active in 8 regions of Ethiopia. ASDEPO treats all their donors the same – with gratitude and stewardship. Since Baal Dan funds were intended to be directly to reach the target community, ASDEPO is implementing Baal Dan funded projects with no admin costs and no distribution costs because the leadership and staff were touched by Tanya’s kindness to help Ethiopians.
ASDEPO received a Phase 1 Grant of USD $15,000 which was used to address malnutrition issues in drought affected areas Amhara, Somalia and Tigray regions to reach 250 children.
ASDEPO received a Phase 2 grant of $30,000 to reach communities in West Gojam area to reach 300 children.
ASDEPO received a Phase 3 grant of $45,000 enabling support to the Oromia region Borena zone Dubuluq woreda designing a project targeting 450 children.
However, the food response in this region remains insufficient in terms of quantity and quality, compromised by insecurity and logistic issues, against a backdrop of increasing malnutrition rates above emergency levels.
This continuity of nutrition helps to stabilize the children and put them out of danger.
Baal Dan and AISDA provided emergency school supplies to children displaced by the war and famine.
The school supplies included scholastic materials, books, and school supplies that the children need to receive education in the refugee schools that had been set up. In total; 1,400 exercise books and school supplies were distributed to 200 children who are at risk.
“We are so grateful.” – Beneficiary mother
“Whether it is $1 or $1 million, we are committed to the partnership with Baal Dan to do our best.”– NGO Partner
“We did whatever was needed to ensure that 100% of the Baal Dan funds went to cover food and supplies – covering expenses we normally could not cover.” – NGO Partner
“They are working in areas that are so hard to reach, passing through a conflict zone and ensuring the aid gets to the children.” – Baal Dan Advisor/Auditor on a recent visit to Ethiopia to meet with the grantees.
“The community formed a committee to help select the children and deal with any disputes and a teacher guardian was appointed to help oversee the distribution of the supplies.” – NGO Partner
Why Give and Why Now?
Perhaps you recall this old music video "Do They Know It's Christmas?" released in 1984? And perhaps you remember there was during that time a massive famine in Ethiopia (1983-1985), one of the worst humanitarian events of the 20th century with over one million famine deaths and millions more displaced. This song and these events left their mark on me as a young girl and I remember making a promise that one day I would do something to help children, especially those impacted by famine. I saw firsthand the scale of need in Ethiopia and even got to go to Dollo Ado Somalia a few years ago – at that time one of the world’s largest refugee camps. A recent article about the drought in Somalia caught my attention – and my heart.
Baal Dan Charities has identified two partners working in the Ethiopia/Somalia region helping children – especially those impacted by malnutrition and children displaced by the drought through emergency schools, health centers, cash transfers/stipends and RUTF (ready-to-use therapeutic food). I asked them both the same thing: “Baal Dan is a small charity. Would $30,000 even make a difference when the needs are so dire?” And to this, both organizations responded with "every penny helps."
Please help me to make a difference in the worst climate-induced drought in decades which is putting millions of children at risk of famine. Please share this page with your network and donate now.

The worst climate-induced drought in decades is putting millions of children at risk in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and across the Horn of Africa. I am passionate about helping allieviate malnutrition for children in need. Plumpy'nut, was invented in 1996 by French pediatrician André Briend. As the name suggests, Plumpy'nut is a peanut-based paste served in a foil pouch. RUTF is something I am passionate about, even giving a TEDx talk about it some years ago.
